Suspected Ashland, Ohio serial killer faces 23 charges as murder trial begins
ASHLAND, Ohio (WKRC) - The trial is underway for a suspected serial killer in Ashland, Ohio.
Shawn Grate is charged with more than 20 counts in the deaths of two women and the kidnapping of a third.
The third woman escaped by calling 911 while he was sleeping.
It took weeks to seat a jury.
On Monday, prosecutors gave their opening statements and told jurors they would hear the horrible details of the case, including video that Grate recorded of the rapes of the women.
“This is not a ‘who-done-it’ case,” said Christopher Tunnell, Ashland Co. Prosecutor. “They discovered the mummified remains of what dental records would identify as Elizabeth Griffith."
The trial is expected to continue for weeks.
Grate could face the death penalty if convicted.
He's also suspected in the deaths of at least two other women, but has not yet been charged.
