CINCINNATI (WKRC) - A 25-year-old man was shot and killed and another man was wounded early Friday morning during a shooting that started inside of a bar and created several crime scenes as people ran from the area.
Neighbors of the Chalet Bar at 920 Race St. in downtown Cincinnati awoke to the sound of gunfire early Friday. Celine Watkins watched from her window as people ran from the bar. There were three crime scenes police investigated: one at Chalet Bar, a second on Elm Street and a third at Court and Race streets.
"A lot of panicked people for sure,” Watkins said. "It was definitely like a handgun sound. Maybe two or three shots at one time that were let off and that was like three or four times that we heard that.”
Watkins said a large number of people ran from the bar into the street.
"They were screaming. We could hear everything. We even saw people running in the street almost getting hit by cars. So everybody's leaving either running or getting in their cars and pulling off pretty quickly,” said Watkins.
Cincinnati Police Lt. William Suter said he had visited the Chalet Bar earlier in the evening and it was expected to be a busy night because three private birthday parties were booked. As police officers arrived on scene, they heard more gunshots and chased some people, according to Suter. Officers taped off the area around a car that had guns in it. The first officers on scene used beer cups to mark the area where shell casings fell.
"It's a chaotic scene right now. We're trying to come up with, put together the timeline of what happened,” Suter said.
Cincinnati Police identified the man who was killed as Desmond Watson. The name of the man who was critically wounded was not released.
Several neighbors of the bar told Local 12 on Friday that they have complained about loud noise, litter and drag racing from the bar to no avail. One man claimed the owner of Chalet Bar reached out to businesses when he first opened in 2018 to try to be a good neighbor but there have been issues with the crowds that hang out at the bar.
A bullet shattered the window at Bob Sumerel Tire at the corner of Race and Court streets. The bullet was in the customer-waiting area when management arrived Friday morning. Another round pierced the tire of one of the business' vans.
"There's been a few issues around the neighborhood over the years but nothing quite that got this close to home,” said store manager Larry McIntosh.
