CINCINNATI (WKEF/WRGT) - Most parents dread the “birds and the bees” talk, but experts say there’s a good chance the right time to talk about sex with your kids is right now.
Dr. Joy Miceli is a pediatric psychologist at Dayton Children’s Hospital. She says it is important that kids get their first bit of information from their parents.
"Waiting too long and making it too big a deal, as opposed to introducing it early on in small pieces, is a mistake,” she said. “That way, it’s not so overwhelming and doesn't seem quite so embarrassing."
Dr. Miceli says it is also a good idea to provide your child with age-appropriate information and then be quiet. Let them ask any questions and don’t overshare.
If you’re having trouble getting the conversation started, use things you see on TV or in a magazine to help break the ice.
