Law enforcement warning about dangers of buying prescription drugs online

The dangers of buying prescription drugs online (WKRC)

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - With prices for some drugs going sky high, some people turn to the internet looking to save money on prescriptions, but beware, criminals are waiting to take advantage of anyone they can.

Law enforcement is cracking down on and now warning consumers about the dangers of buying drugs over the internet.

A few surveillance photos show a postal customer who sent almost 80 packages daily from the post office.

Inside of the packages were counterfeit drugs mailed by Shoaib Haroown.

Thomas Halsell, a US Postal Inspector, said "We found Mr. Haroown receiving orders and then supplying those orders out to customers that had offered pharmaceutical pills on websites or online pharmacies."

Consumers may order the drugs online in an effort to save money, but make no mistake, the move is like playing "Russian Roulette."

"They were receiving packages with pills in them that were in Ziploc bags. They weren't marking with what they were. They had no instructions with them. They had no side effects. They had no warnings," Halsell added.

Dale Forrester, a USPIS Sr. Forensic Chemist, said "You may receive the actual compound and you may not. You may receive something that's deadly to you."

A search warrant of Haroown's home showed random uncounted pills, credit card numbers, and passports in his home.

Law enforcement cannot emphasize enough that you are gambling with your life by taking drugs that don't follow legal standards.

One of the things to make sure of is if they ask for your doctor's prescription, that when the package is received, it actually comes in some type of self-locking mechanism, particularly the brown bottles with the interlocking caps.

It needs to have the doctor's name on it, the type of pill that's inside of it, the daily dosage, the side effects, warnings, and the list of active ingredients.

Mr. Haroown was sentenced to five years in federal prison.
