Tipoff Classic: Annual event held in memory of Lauren Hill
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - On November 2nd of 2014, Lauren Hill made her dream come true of playing in a college basketball game.
On Saturday, both Mt. St. Joseph and the Xavier women will play in the Lauren Hill Tipoff Classic.
Local 12 and Brad Johansen chronicled Lauren’s battle with the cancer that took her life.
Brad says he was privileged to call the play-by-play for Lauren’s first game and share her mission that continues, three years later.
“Never give up.” To make it to the court that day, let alone make a layup, was mission accomplished for a 19-year-old diagnosed with Diffused Intrinsic Pontine Glioma, or DIPG, with a few months to live, but the mission changed.
The challenge helped raise more than a million dollars while she was here. Her mom would love to see the challenge come back, and the Tipoff Classic to carry more meaning.
She made two layups that day and took the Pat Summit Award from its namesake and gave new meaning to courage.
Xavier tips off against New Hampshire at 5 p.m. Saturday, followed by Mt. St. Joe taking on Hiram at 7:30 p.m.
On Friday night, the four teams will gather for dinner together and to watch the documentary Eric Gerhardt and Brad Johansen produced: #Playfor22.
