Woman pleads guilty for fatally shooting her friend in OTR

Ashley Freeny pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of voluntary manslaughter for shooting and kiling her friend Briyona Ragland (WKRC)

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - A woman admitted to shooting and killing her friend in Over-the-Rhine. A judge sentenced Ashley Freeny to six years in prison on a reduced charge of voluntary manslaughter.

Briyona Ragland was shot to death in an apartment on East McMicken Avenue in January.

Ragland's mom said in court that just hours before the fatal shot was fired, the two were hanging out, drinking and having fun.

But something happened inside that apartment. Prosecutors say in a fit of rage Freeny, 27, shot Ragland in the face. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Freeny admitted to the shooting on Thursday and pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and a gun charge. She was originally charged with murder. She apologized, saying if she could change anything about that night, she would change everything.

Ragland's mom, Michelle, said her punishment isn't tough enough.

"There's no way from where my daughter was shot that it was an accidental discharge. There's no way," Michelle said. "You take your butt whooping. She'll take her butt whooping, whatever. You live to see another day. You had to kill her? My whole family is suffering, we all suffering."

The judge agreed, saying if Freeny didn't have a gun, the killing wouldn't have happened.
