PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (WKRC) - A three-year-old Pennsylvania boy has died almost three years after he was shot multiple times.
Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner says his office is waiting on a medical examiner's report, but believes his death was directly related to those injuries.
In October of 2019, the toddler's father, father, then 25-year-old Nafes Monroe, got into a violent exchange as a result of a drug deal.
Monroe tried to pay with counterfeit money, and used his son, Yaseem Jenkins, as a human shield when another man started shooting.
Jenkins, who was 11 months old at the time, was shot four times, including once in the head.
Police arrested Monroe and charged him with child endangerment as well as reckless endangerment. He plead guilty to both.
Krasner called the young boy's death a "tough moment."
A GoFundMe has been set up to help cover Jenkins' funeral costs.
"Yaseem fought long and hard to recover from his injuries while still being the strong happy kid he was, but sadly lost the battle," the page reads. "It saddens us to have to lay him to rest at such a young age. Our family is devastated and heartbroken by his unexpected passing."
