SHEFFIELD LAKE, Ohio (WKRC) - An Ohio police chief is out of a job after leaving a racist note for an officer on his force. He claims it was just a joke, but no one in town is laughing.
The incident happened in Sheffield Lake, which is just west of Cleveland, on June 25. Video from the department's booking room shows the now-former police chief Anthony Campos placing a note that says "Ku Klux Klan" on a Black officer's jacket.
Mayor Dennis Bring says he didn't know about the incident until Tuesday when he got a letter from the police union about a harassment allegation.
"The chief was standing in his office and he made a joke, 'Am I going to get fired over this?' And I looked at the law director, and I said, 'Hand him his paper.' He said, 'After 30 years this is what I get?' And I said, 'You have 10 minutes to get out of your office,'" Bring said.
The chief then retired.
Bring says it's possible Campos could face charges related to the incident.
