SACRAMENTO, CALIF (TND) — California Governor Gavin Newsom is getting slammed as a hypocrite after donning a fleece jacket and hat while urging Californians not to use their air conditioning after 4 p.m. to "save energy" amid an unprecedented heat wave in the West.
Californians, you've stepped up to help in a big way to keep the lights on so far. But we're heading to the worst part of this heat wave and the risk for outages is real and its immediate," Newsom said in a video shared online Tuesday in which he appears to be sitting in an air-conditioned room wearing a fleece jacket and a hat with the California bear insignia on it.
These triple-digit temperatures throughout much of our state are leading not surprisingly to record demand on the energy grid," Newsom added. "Everyone has to do their part to help step up for just a few more days. Individuals, the state, industries, business, all doing their part to help reduce strain on the grid."
Newsom suggested residents continue to help by "pre-cooling" their homes in the early morning hours when more power is available and keep their windows and blinds closed to retain that cool air and keep hot air out. Additionally, Newsom told residents that on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, after 4 p.m., thermostats should be set to at least 78 degrees Fahrenheit and residents should refrain from using large appliances.
Critics blasted Newsom on social media this week for delivering his message wearing a warm jacket despite the historical heat wave sweeping the Western United States.
Some also slammed the California mayor for previous instances where Newsom's actions haven't always matched what he instructs the public to do in his state.
"2 words French Laundry. Man cannot stand to do what he orders every citizen to do. Poster child for Hypocrisy," one Twitter user commented on Newsom's video.
Last week, the state of California issued the same energy usage alert, asking residents to stop using A/C after 4 p.m. and pointing out, particularly, that residents were not to charge their electric vehicles after 4 p.m.
The alert came just several days after state regulators voted to ban the sale of gas-powered vehicles in the state by 2035.
