CINCINNATI (WKRC) - This offseason will be an important one for the Bengals as they try to rebuild the roster following a 2-14 finish in 2019, which marked their fourth straight losing season. With the free agency signing period set to begin on March 18, Local12.com is going to take a daily look at a player on the roster leading up to that date and where they stand contractually heading into the 2020 season and where they may fit on the 2020 roster. We will look at players under contract first followed by players who will be free agents:
Player: Billy Price
- Position: Guard/Center
- NFL Seasons: 2
- 2019 Recap: The team's first-round pick in the 2018 draft lost his starting center spot in training camp to Trey Hopkins and then wound up starting seven games at left guard and one game at right guard and participating in all 16 games.
- Contract Status: He is entering the third year of his initial four year rookie contract that is worth $11.7 million and is fully guaranteed. He received a $6.6 million signing bonus that is prorated at $1.65 million per year. The amount of contract applied to the team salary cap is $3.2 million and if the Bengals release him the salary cap hit for this season would be $6.9 million.
- 2020 Roster Projection: He will be in the mix for a starting guard spot and can also backup Hopkins at center.
- The Skinny: After missing six games as a rookie due to a foot injury (games 3-8) and playing mediocre at best after he returned, Price lost his starting center spot in 2019 during training camp but found some success after moving to guard. Perhaps he found a better fit at that position, and at worst he is able to be a backup at center and guard. It's not what you would hope for a recent first-round draft pick.
