Jackson, Dennard to start at cornerback in Bengals preseason opener
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - It was announced prior to Friday's Bengals-Tampa Bay Buccaneers preseason game in Paul Brown Stadium that William Jackson III and Darqueze Dennard would get the start at cornerback.
Jackson, who was the team's first-round pick last season, but missed the entire season, including preseason, due to injury, is starting at left cornerback in place of projected starter Dre Kirkpatrick. Dennard, who is expected to be the team's nickel/slot cornerback when the regular season begins, is starting at right cornerback in place of Adam Jones.
Kirkatrick is not expected to play in the game.
Neither Jones nor Kirkpatrick are reportedly injured so the move is just to give them the game off, although Jones might still return punts, while the team gets a longer look at Jackson and Dennard against first-string wide receivers.
In addition to Kirkpatrick it was also announced before the game that the following players would not participate, most due to injury: wide receiver John Ross (shoulder); running back Giovani Bernard (returning from knee surgery); cornerback Tony McRae; running back Cedric Peerman; safety Brandon Wilson (hamstring); safety George Iloka (sprained knee); defensive tackle David Dean and tight end C.J. Uzomah (sprained ankle).
