UC, Miami wide receivers on Biletnikoff Award watch list

UC wide receiver Devin Gray (UC Atheltics).

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - University of Cincinnati senior wide receiver Devin Gray and Miami junior wide receiver wide receiver James Gardner were named to the preseason watch list for the 2017 Biletnikoff Award.

The Biletnikoff Award annually recognizes the outstanding receiver in college football and is named in honor of former Florida State University and Oakland Raiders wide receiver Fred Biletnikoff. Any player regardless of position (wide receiver, tight end, slot back, and running back) who catches a pass is eligible for the award. As such, the Biletnikoff Award recognizes the outstanding receiver, not merely the outstanding wide receiver.

Gray burst onto the scene for UC in 2016, becoming the first UC wideout in 129 years to tally 100 or more receiving yards in his Bearcats debut. He hauled in a team-high 58 receptions for 860 yards and five TDs.

Gardner finished the 2016 season with 45 catches for 750 yards and six touchdowns in 11 games.

Other receivers will periodically be added to the watch list as their season performances dictate.

The award recipient is selected by the highly Biletnikoff Award National Selection Committee, a group of prominent college football journalists, commentators, and former receivers. Explicit criteria for candidate eligibility, watch list inclusion, and voting appear at:

The 2017 Biletnikoff Award winner will be presented live on Dec. 7, 2017, on The Home Depot College Football Awards Show to be broadcast 7-9 p.m. on ESPN.

The National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA) which encompasses the most prestigious awards in college football, are unveiling their preseason watch lists over a 12-day period this month. Seventeen of the association's 23 awards select a preseason watch list and the NCFAA has spearheaded a coordinated effort to promote each award's preseason candidates.
