Beechwood claims second straight state title in dominating fashion
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Senior running back James Davis scored three short rushing touchdowns and senior wide receiver/kicker Daniel Mescher caught a touchdown pass, kicked two field goals and five extra points to lead Beechwood to a 41-0 victory over Raceland in the Kentucky High School Athletic Association Class A state championship game on Friday at Kroger Field in Lexington.
Beechwood outgained Raceland 305-27 and had 18 first downs to three for Raceland.
Mescher had 12 receptions for 118 yards and Davis rushed for 88 yards on 24 carries.
Senior quarterback Brayden Burch completed 22 of 30 passes for 186 yards and the touchdown to Mescher.
Beechwood (13-1) grabbed a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter on a one-yard touchdown run by Davis.
The Tigers then scored 17 points in the final 5:57 of the first half to put the game away.
It marked the first time in four decades the state football championship was in Lexington, and the largest crowd for a Class A title game since 2007 of 7,103 came out to watch Friday afternoon.
Noel Rash, who finished his 12th year as Tigers' head coach, won his fourth state title with the team.
The win gives Beechwood 13 total state football championships.
