CINCINNATI (Cincinnati Business Courier/WKRC) - Xavier University is considering bringing back a football program for the first time in 50 years. But it all hinges on one thing: money.

Xavier is looking at adding football in an effort to boost enrollment, athletic director Greg Christopher told Business Courier in an interview. It would be a non-scholarship Division I program. The idea came out of a strategic planning process done after new president Colleen Hanycz arrived in July 2021.

“We continue to explore football, and I continue to flippantly say it’s a definite maybe,” Christopher said. “It’s a model of using sports teams to boost enrollment.”
